Not too long ago, in a city pretty close to home…. I was visiting some friends of the family and their grand-kiddos at the lunch hour, and was schooled on Lay’s Stax. I had seen them in a grocery store a time or two, but never looked into the glutenous factor – to contain or not to contain. According to their website, five of their chips’ flavors are gluten-free.
“Miss Wendi, would you like to try our potato chips?” Why, yes. Yes, I would!
First of all, it’s a bit difficult to turn down the adorable, smiling faces of a four and seven year old at the lunch table. They had started eating already, as I was snacked on the plump, freshly picked bowl of strawberries near me. However, who am I to turn down one chip from these giggling young ladies? If they want to share, share they will.
Lunch was fun, and eating unbroken chips is a treat. (I’m a former Pringles consumer from childhood.)
Five of the Lay’s Stax are labeled gluten-free:
- Original
- Sour Cream & Onion
- Mesquite Barbeque
- Cheddar
- Salt & Vinegar
I tried – and enjoyed – the Original flavor. I also appreciate the Lay’s Stax website is transparent with their chips’ labels (unlike the ‘other’ mentioned chips in this post). The ‘original’ flavor is the only variety without MSG.
If you’re curious one day, google “Lay’s Stax vs. Pringles” and you’ll find numerous articles and YouTube videos about this ongoing chip battle. Kids, teens and adults all weigh in.
According to many, Lay’s Stax are thicker, crunchier, the taste is on the top of the curve, and no chip is the same. Pringles are thinner potato ‘crisps’, uniform consistency, the taste is on the bottom of the curve, and they have a bit less salt. Oh, and they contain gluten!
That said, this summer I may choose to add a canister of Lay’s Stax Original chips in my beach bag to share with friends. After all, my fond memories of the beach as a kid include watermelon, juicy cantaloupe, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, carrot sticks, and of course, some potato chips.
Don’t forget to hydrate!
