Itchy skin and rashes aren’t any fun, and it takes many people months of frustration and irritation before realizing… IT COULD BE YOUR LAUNDRY DETERGENT! Enter gluten-free laundry soaps to the rescue.
If you’re itching to try a new laundry soap, Seventh Generation is now available in most grocery stores, and free & clear of all the ick found in many standard brands.
Seventh Generation Natural Laundry Detergent is non-toxic, biodegradable, and still packs a punch on stubborn stains while being “gentle to your world”. It’s cruelty free, kosher, gluten-free, and USDA certified biobased.
They disclose product ingredients on their website, which does include SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate). That said, their article states “We use SLS that is derived from coconut or palm kernel oil from renewable carbon plant-derived materials.” Before you discount them, please read the whole article, written March 2016, as it contains great information on SLS usage and it’s fears.
Rounding out my top three gluten-free laundry detergent picks are All Free & Clear and Purex Free & Clear.
All Free & Clear laundry detergent has been my go-to for years. I have sensitive skin, and don’t enjoy the scents many detergents leave on your clothes. All Free & Clear touts itself as “#1 Recommended Brand by Dermatologists for Sensitive Skin”, hypoallergenic, and removes 99% of the top everyday & seasonal allergens. It’s ingredients list is a bit tricky to navigate online, and I didn’t find any mention of SLS inclusion on the list or on the bottle. If you’re allergic to SLS please investigate further.
Purex Free & Clear laundry detergent is also hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested, and does not include perfumes or dyes. Many people on forums with gluten sensitivities rave about this product, and have not experienced itchy skin reactions using it. Similarly, no mention of SLS inclusion on their website.
So many gluten-free laundry detergents are available, your google searches will produce pages of blogs addressing them. I’ve highlighted the three soaps I’ve easily found in grocery stores, and I’ve not had a negative reaction after usage.
For further, perhaps even more ‘natural’ gluten-free laundry detergents, check out “Living Gluten and Grain Free’s” article (2010) and Celiac.com’s article (2005) for starters. Their gluten-free laundry detergent lists includes the following (also corn- and soy-free):
- Seventh Generation
- ECOS
- Tropical Traditions
- Planet Inc.
- Molly Suds
As with all gluten-free items, ingredients are always subject to change so make sure to check the labels carefully.
