Start getting serious about eating gluten-free if you’re celiac or gluten intolerant. Those of us affected are at a greater risk of developing one or more associated autoimmune diseases than the general public.
So much great online research is available supporting this, I’ve put together a few links to read up on, as the information is invaluable.
Some autoimmune diseases associated with celiac disease – per GIG‘s (Gluten Intolerance Group‘s) article (March 2016) – they also provide a ‘printer friendly’ list with explanations of each:
- Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (Type 1 Diabetes)
- Thyroid Cancer
- Grave’s Disease
- Hashimoto’s Disease
- Addison’s Disease
- Autoimmune Chronic Active Hepatitis
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Pernicious Anemia
- Raynaud’s Phenomenon
- Scleroderma
- Sjogren’s Syndrome
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
The Celiac Disease Foundation‘s article What Is Celiac Disease? adds these long-term health conditions for undiagnosed or untreated celiac disease:
- Iron deficiency anemia
- Early onset osteoporosis or osteopenia
- Infertility and miscarriage
- Lactose intolerance
- Vitamin and mineral deficiencies
- Central and peripheral nervous system disorders
- Pancreatic insufficiency
- Intestinal lymphomas and other GI cancers (malignancies)
- Gall bladder malfunction
- Neurological manifestations, including ataxia, epileptic seizures, dementia, migraine, neuropathy, myopathy and multifocal leucoencephalopathy
My third go-to for gluten-free information is from Danna Korn’s book Living Gluten-free For Dummies. She lists many of the above autoimmune disorders and neurological conditions (1st edition, pg 46), plus:
- Mood disorders:
- ADD/ADHD,
- Autism
- Depression and bipolar disease
Danna Korn’s book is AMAZING and an easy start to helping one ‘settle in’ to a better understanding of celiac disease and gluten intolerance.
If the above has concerned you, it should. The best news, according to Danna Korn, and other gluten experts is: Healing Begins On Day One.
Let’s do this!
