Downtown Escondido, CA offers “a family-owned restaurant dedicated to offering fresh and local ingredients in a friendly environment” – and gluten-free burger buns! This casual burger eatery caught my eye while driving down Grand Avenue on my first visit to “Esco”, and the draw of the g-free bun pulled me in. Or was it the crowd? My gramps always said “go where it’s crowded – there’s good food there!” ;o).
Friendly staff await you at the counter to order your meal, give you a number, and then deliver your food nice and hot as soon as it’s ready. I ordered: “The Classic” – handmade fresh Angus beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, and Bench sauce; seasoned natural fries; and a fresh brewed iced tea.
Ok, so you caught me. I did not try “Deanna’s Gluten Free” hamburger bun. Not because I didn’t want to, but after finding out it was an additional $ 2.50 just for the bun (on a $ 7.50 burger), I opted to save room/$ instead for the yummy seasoned fries. And they were fabulous!
Their menu is full of tempting bites, and I suppose the next time I will try another WITH D’s gluten-free bun and update my findings.
Burger Bench is conveniently located, a great place to meet up with friends and enjoy a fun atmosphere. Lots of family-style tables, some hi-top bar seating, and an outside patio fills up fast during the lunch hour.
They support local food partners – a huge plus in my decision to try them out – ensuring the food is fresh and tasty. Now if only they’d add some gluten-free beers to their selection! (They do have a few wines to choose from – but every now and then I’d like a beer with my burger, ya know?)

Loved your grandpa comment 🙂 Food looks relish and fresh and am wondering about the cheese – does it have a design in it? Always looking and wondering 🙂 Great job of writing!
