Searching for something sweet one afternoon in Overland Park, KS, I turned on my iPhone maps app and searched for ‘gluten free bakeries’. Only two blocks away (lucky me!), I drove to Gigi’s Cupcakes and the rest is history. I’m hooked. Gigi’s Cupcakes are the b e s t gluten-free cupcakes I’ve ever tasted. (Ok, I’ll say ‘yet’… however they’ve set the standards high).
I first saw Gigi Butler’s story (Chief Brand Officer) on the Undercover Boss show a few years back. It was all about the “Gigi Swirl” and making sure the employees got it right. I loved her story, her dedication to her brand, and had no idea that years later I would be standing in one of her stores. Even more impressive, I had no idea she made gluten-free cupcakes!
Within a four month time frame, I taste-tested a handful of Gigi’s Cupcakes (with the help of some family and friends, of course!):
- Midnight Magic Chocolate Chip
- Miss Princess (yummy strawberry)
- Chocolate Peanut Butter
- Banana
- Triple Chocolate Torte (super rich, brownie-like taste)
- Lemon
My favorite is probably the Miss Princess, although the Banana and Lemon are closely tied.
The staff at the Overland Park, KS location was always friendly, and encouraged me to call the store in the morning to see what gluten-free flavors were available that day. They would hold my order aside, assuring me a delicious, gluten-free cupcake when I arrived (it was a bit of a drive for me).
Looking at their website menu today, I see a few more gluten-free flavors are listed, such as:
- Chocolate Salted Caramel
- Orange Sunrise
- Strawberries & Cream
Gluten-free cupcakes are a little tricky to get ‘right’, as the flour used will ‘make’ or ‘break’ a dessert. Gigi Butler must add a lot of love into these cupcakes! They are moist, tasty, sweet, and absolutely none of that after taste sometimes gluten-free desserts might leave with you.
A quick stop over the Christmas holiday tempted us to try a Chocolate Peppermint variety. Delic!
I couldn’t resist adding this last photo of my recent 6-pack of Gigi’s Cupcakes – all gluten-free. My mom visited me in California last month, and wanted to surprise me with some cupcakes for our weekend together. Between the TSA screening, the flight, and juggling bags around, I’d say she did a pretty great job of delivering them. We didn’t let a little smooshed frosting get in the way of our enjoyment. It actually made for a sweeter, funnier memory!
Gigi’s Cupcakes own 100 locations in 23 states! I’m patiently waiting for a California location to open…
Hey, Gigi, give me a call!
