Gluten-free dog food… do you share a gluten intolerance with Fido? What’s a dog to eat?

It’s an interesting question, isn’t it? Do some dogs have celiac disease? Are some gluten intolerant? How would you possibly know?
Oh, if only dogs could talk!
Dogs are cool. I’ve lived with dogs, worked with dogs, walked dogs for extra cash, and simply loved dogs. What’s not to love? Those big eyes, that spunk, and the attention they constantly give to you. You are, after all, their special ‘person’. And they’d do just about anything for you!
So feed them nutritious food. They’re counting on you.
I searched the internet for gluten-free dog food and found quite a lot of dog food brands available, including:
- Blue Freedom
- Beyond Pet Food
- Solid Gold
- Orijen
- Wellness Core
- Acana
- Earthborn Holistic
- Canidae
- Nature’s Variety
- Nutrisca
A PetMed article popped up during my search titled “Is A Grain or Gluten-free Diet Right for my Dog?” Such great information. According to the article, many times the answer is “NO”.
Apparently, beef (95 cases), dairy (55 cases) and corn (7 cases) are most likely the food allergy culprits in your dog’s diet, they report.
Another interesting suggestion is Irish Setter dogs in the U.K. are the most likely dog breed to be celiac or gluten intolerant. Symptoms often include:
- itchiness
- excessive hair loss
- bald patches
- inflamed skin
- sore and scabs
- “hot spots”
All said, whether or not dogs are better built to metabolize grains than us, as the saying goes “you are what you eat”. Whether you’re a person, dog, kitty, cow, horse… try to stick to a nutritious daily diet filled with more protein and vegetables than fillers and unnecessary glutens. After all, you want to enjoy Fido every blessed day you have him/her in your life!
Now go hug your pup!
