Gluten-free Sweetness at SusieCakes

A deliciously s w e e t flourless chocolate cupcake from SusieCakes
My sweet tooth directed my drive through Carlsbad last week, and (luckily!) I stumbled upon SusieCakes at La Costa Town Square. I never know where gluten-free treats will pop up, and this cute, little shop provided a few options for a taste-test.
I appreciate their motto – “If you can’t spell it, we don’t bake with it. Just like our grandmothers, we do not use any mixes, artificial preservatives, or trans-fats in our products. We bake our products from scratch using only the freshest and finest ingredients.“
SusieCakes‘ website lists 17 California stores ranging south from Carlsbad (San Diego County), many Los Angeles locations, north to Greenbrea (Marin County), and 2 locations in Texas (Dallas, TX and Plano, TX). SusieCakes offers a very sweet answer to your quest for a tasty treat!
The location I visited is in one of San Diego’s newer North County shopping centers, at the intersection of Rancho Santa Fe Road & La Costa Ave., and the ladies who work here are lovely. This store offers four gluten-free options:
- flourless chocolate cupcake
- flourless peanut butter cookie
- flourless oatmeal raisin cookie
- vanilla pudding
These desserts are labeled “made without gluten”. All four are flourless (do not use a flour substitute), yet are not certified gluten-free due to possible cross-contamination.
Once their cute SusieCakes seal is on your bagged purchase, you leave wanting to rip it open as soon as you get to your car. At least, I did! I wasn’t fooling anyone, this cupcake was for me and me only. And I didn’t wait ’til I got home to sample it ;o).
I was prepared for something delicious, but was not prepared for the super s w e e t frosting! Make sure to have a refreshing drink with you, as after one (large) bite I gulped down some tropical iced tea. Ahhhhhh – such a lovely combination. I was actually able to save the rest for later.
SusieCakes offer mini versions of their cupcakes, so perhaps next time I’m in the quest for sweetness, a one-bite “mini” will do the trick.
