Birkholm’s Bakery & Cafe in Solvang and the Sarah Bernhardt… my favorite gluten-free cookie!

Birkholm’s Bakery ~ hands down bakes the BEST Sarah Bernhardt cookies in Solvang!

Spending the day in Solvang, CA is always a fun outing.  Cute boutique shopping, wine tasting rooms, international cuisine, and Danish bakeries.  It is the “Danish Capital of America” after all, and when in Copehagen, eat delicious Danish cookies!

I have taste-tested many gluten-free cookies over the past six years, and none are as delectable as Birkholm’s Bakery & Cafe’s Sarah Bernhardt cookies.  

At the corner of Alisai Road & Copenhagen Drive is the quaint Birkholm’s Bakery & Cafe

This family-owned and operated bakery & cafe opens daily at 7am.  Their story began in 1951 when Carl “Cookie” Sr. and Charlotte Birkholm founded it, after baking as a family together for over 60 years.  All their generational Danish recipes brought over from Denmark by “Cookie” are used today.

Presending the Sarah Bernhardt Cookie – the stand-alone, BEST gluten-free cookie on my list!

It’s all I could do to save one Sarah Bernhardt cookie to photograph before indulging.  The ‘stand alone’ standing alone.

I’ve introduced many friends to this bakery, just to pick up one of these cookies for me when “passing through”.  Sarah Bernhardt’s are an almond cookie topped with a rich chocolate layer of fudge and dipped in chocolate.  You’ll need a beverage with this one!

Their gluten-free Florentine cookie comes in a close second – delicious!

Birkholm’s Bakery & Cafe didn’t stop with the SB cookie for us gluten-free’ers.  Their gluten-free assortment of goodies include:

For those not in the area, Birkholm’s Bakery & Cafe can ship any order within 2-3 business days, or you can call them to price out overnight shipping.

I’ve not yet tried their sandwiches, salads, or soups in the cafe (as of today, they do not offer gluten-free bread).

Trip Advisor’s website contains 19 pages of reviews for this bakery & cafe… and the SB cookie is often praised.  With so many applauding their efforts, they might make your list of places to stop by on your trip along California’s coast.
