Bring on the Mongolian Beef! Indulging in Chinese food is often a challenge for those of us eating gluten-free. Thankfully, Philip Chiang (born in Shanghai) incorporated a tasty gluten-free menu to his P.F. Chang’s China Bistro’s, located in more than 200 locations worldwide.

“Welcome to my bakery!” Since 1991 Corner Bakery Cafe has served up delicious soups, sandwiches and desserts in their “casual neighborhood gathering place.” To my happiness, I stopped in one of their cafe’s a few months ago and found “gluten-friendly” bread now available. Opa!

1993 was a great year… my movie ticket was $4.00, a gallon of gas for my little 4-cyclinder car was $1.16/gal, and Ty Warner launched the first Beanie Babies. AND – in Denver, Colorado, Steve Ells founded and opened the first Chipotle Mexican Grill. Now they are found all across the United States.
Chipotle’s motto is ‘Food With Integrity’, using zero trans fat in their frying oil, no rBGH in their cheese or sour cream, and naturally raised chicken, pork and beef. Steve’s story is refreshing, as is the huge gluten-free, great-tasting menu at Chipotle.

Just off the 14 frwy. in Lancaster stands Julianni’s Italian Ristorante, a welcoming, family owned restaurant with a delicious menu full of gluten-free options, and very, very friendly staff. “The Julianni family patriarch, Rafael Julianni, arrived in New York City in the late 1800’s from his family in Sicily, Italy… The flagship of the Julianni’s heritage, dedication to service and Sicillian and Italian cuisine (Lancaster, CA.).”

“Get in here!” The Counter is one of those places everyone can find something to eat, pricing is reasonable, and the wait staff is friendly. They offer a separate gluten-free menu (“Gluten-Free? So Can We”) filled with starters, signature burgers, signature bowls, build your own burgers, shakes, beer and wine. I’ve dined here with meat eaters, vegans, kids and ‘older folks’, and everyone enjoyed it. ‘Creative construction… and being inventive’ are part of their mission. Accomplished!

California Pizza Kitchen first opened its doors in Beverly Hills, CA in 1985. Cooking in an open kitchen with a ‘California twist on global flavors’, CPK made its mark on my go-to restaurant list many years ago, even before knowing I was gluten intolerant – love their sweet pizza dough! They’ve expanded their restaurants since then, and their menus, and I’m happy they’re offering gluten-free pizza once again.

Endeavor to see Endeavor! It’s an awesome site to witness the size of this aircraft so close, especially after being one of the spectators who drove down to Venice Beach September 21, 2013 to see, hear, and feel Space Shuttle Endeavor being flown over my head on it’s way to Exposition Park. Simply stunning.

Mendocino Farms is a perfect lunch or dinner spot for quick, scrumptious artisan sandwiches, sides or salads. They offer tasty bread options for everyone ~ and gluten-free eaters dine on Rising Heart Bakery’s gluten-free bread. Their approach is to “reconstruct ‘fine dining’ entrees to the sandwich level and take classic regional sandwiches and give them a modern interpretation.” They’ve done a fantastic job at that!

Culina. A modern Italian, mouth-watering dining experience located in the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
It was a special evening out, celebrating nothing in particular and everything wonderful, and my seester and I dined from their 5-course prix fixe tasting menu. What a treat! The catch, to leave my camera at home and not flash the food. Darn. However, yes, when the dessert came around, who could resist the smiley staring at us! Thank goodness for iPhones.
